When I was in college, I worked for over 3 years as a Peer Career Advisor. This means I was trained by a dozen career experts, then helped students one on one with their resumes & cover letters, job hunting, networking… pretty much any career questions they had, I answered.
After I graduated, I realized my friends and I were all struggling with the same problems:
We took toxic, terrible jobs because we were desperate after graduating (a week after graduation, I moved from NY to Memphis and took the first job I was offered)
We felt stuck in those jobs and lost about where to go next (I ended up quitting 9 months in and started working from home)
We were struggling to succeed in an outdated system that wasn’t built by or for us
My friends all had another problem: they didn’t know anything about finding and landing high quality jobs.
My Career Services job filled in what high school & college skipped (thanks a lot, geometry)
When I ditched my toxic job, I felt free.
